So when I’m not doing the whole HAZARD Studio thing or writing for myself, I work for Wargate Books as their Chief Trunk Monkey. One of the things I have the privilege of doing is working on their latest kickstarter, SGT THOR - By Anspach & Cole. Sgt Thor is a spin off series from the Forgotten Ruin novels, detailing a US Army Ranger detachment shot through time to a land of Tolkienesque nightmares. Their premier sniper, Thor get’s the itch to go out on his own and BAM… we have five brand new novels from amazing writers Jason Anspach and Nick Cole.
The first of what is sure to be many obstacles our favorite sniper faces is a pack of animated corpses from the wrecks of nearby pirate ships. I thought it would be fun to set up a simple scenario to let everyone play out the Forgotten Ruin at their table.
So if you’re using something like Swords and Wizardry…
Or if you’re a HAZARD Studio game junky and have a thing for the SUPER6 system with that groovy Search & Destroy add on, it could also look something like this.
So now that we have our monsters, let’s get into it.
SCENARIO: A group of operators in the Forgotten Ruin end up on the beach after a storm. Heavy weapons are off the table but everyone made it to the beach with all their personal kit (Minus the pogey bait, so some people might get antsy).
After the group collects themselves, Skeletal pirates begin coming at them in waves from the water (see what I did there?). The GM should have the soldiers use trees and rocks for cover against the undead, who have to close the distance with them to fight.
If the GM wants to prolong the fight or use it for a prelude to an island adventure, have the soldiers conduct a withdrawal by fire to a broken temple or dusted out city where they can move, shoot and communicate through buildings or across the terrain as the skeletons give chase. Throughout the encounter, the GM should add in hints that something is controlling the skeletons and is not happy the soldiers landed here.
Don’t forget to check out the SGT THOR Kickstarter, running through the month of June!
